Parent’s Page – 2nd Edition

Parent’s Page – 2nd Edition

For our seniors and their parents, please plan to attend this evening especially planned for you. In addition to college information and preparing and taking the SAT, information will be given highlighting the events and activities of the senior year, what to expect, dates, and expenses. The meeting will be in the Great Room at
7 pm and we will finish no later than 8 pm. We are looking forward to an evening of fellowship with you.

Thursday, September 26th and Friday, September 27th all our teachers will be attending our annual Teacher Convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There will be no school or athletic practices those days.

We are planning our eighth annual Fall Spirit Day for all students in 1st – 12th grade. We have scheduled a boys soccer game at 12:00 against Calvary, a JV girls volleyball game at 1:00 and a girls varsity volleyball game at 2:00. We will be selling concessions (snacks and drinks only) in the gymnasium. Lets go Braves!

Students in the 10th and 11th grades will be administered the PSAT test on Wednesday, October 16th. The PSAT will not only allow us to judge your child’s academic progress up to this point, but will also help to prepare them for the SAT. Parents should ensure students taking the test get as much rest as possible and eat a nutritious meal the morning of the test.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, during the childhood years it is extremely important to ensure children are eating properly. This not only includes the quality of meals but the frequency as well. The school day can be both mentally and physically taxing and is too long to go without eating a meal unless the child has consciously decided that he or she wishes to commit that time to prayer and fasting. With that in mind, it is the policy of GBS to never allow a child to go hungry if they forgot to bring their lunch or do not have money to purchase one. In the event a child does not have a lunch, he or she will be provided a sandwich and a carton of milk for the cost of $1.75.

We wish to remind families that due to Maryland state law, if a student needs to receive any medication at school, we must have a medication form on file signed by your child’s doctor. The medication ordered by the doctor should be sent in the original container with the child’s name on it.

As a reminder, on sunny days our aftercare program will be outside on the playground. If your elementary child participates in our aftercare program, please send them in with an extra water bottle to drink while outside after school. All book bags, lunch boxes, jackets, etc. should be labeled with your child’s name. Thank you!

SECONDARY AFTERCARE (6th – 12th grade)
Secondary students not picked up by 3:15 will need to report to the gym bleachers for aftercare. Parents will be required to sign out secondary students not picked up by 3:30.

Parents, please help us in quickly exiting the children from your car in the morning in order to avoid back-ups on Oakwood Road. Please pull all the way down to the second cross walk at the back of the gym. Please have all coats, backpacks and lunches ready and have children exit from the right side of your vehicle. K3-K5 parents should use the lane directly in front of the Kindergarten modular. Parents should not exit their car while in the drop-off line. Thank you!

Parents, if your child has a food allergy we would like you to know that all of our pre-packaged hot foods in the lunchroom have the following on the label: “Food contains wheat, milk, eggs, and soy.” Our cheeseburgers contain sesame seeds. In addition, prior to ordering Chick-fil-a, Pizza Hut or Subway lunches, please investigate their dietary information if your child has a food allergy.

School standard dress must be worn for all school activities. Students are not allowed to change out of their school uniform for any reason other than P.E. or sports practice. Students who are not leaving school immediately after P.E. or practice must change back into their school uniform for aftercare and/or games. Important: Parents please remember that gym shoes for indoor P.E. and for rainy day recess must have a non-marking sole. We recommend Velcro fastened shoes if your child cannot tie his/her shoes.

Articles in lost and found may only be claimed from 8:00 – 8:15 am, during lunch or from 3:00 – 3:15 pm. In order to encourage individual responsibility, a fee of $.25 for elementary students and $1.00 for secondary students will be assessed for each claimed item. Demerits will be given to secondary students that habitually lose articles.

Please remember that students who are ill or have a fever are not permitted to attend class and should not be brought to school. A child who wakes up with a fever and is given Tylenol is still a sick child. Please do not send your child to school within a 24 hour period of fever, vomiting or diarrhea. No student with a temperature of 100 degrees or above will be allowed to remain in school. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
